What is PINT-AE? The UAE e-invoice format explained

It sounds like something only your Accredited Service Provider needs. The data in it comes from you, and most small businesses are missing half of it today.

Where PINT-AE comes from

PINT-AE is the Peppol International Invoice specialised for the UAE. It is UBL 2.1 XML: a standard envelope with named fields. The Ministry adopted it so every e-invoice on the network can be read the same way, whether your buyer is in Dubai or on the other side of a free-zone gate. Ministerial Decision No. 244 of 2025 is the implementation decision that puts the system into force; the field list itself is published on the Ministry of Finance portal as mandatory field requirements.

You do not have to like XML. You do have to be able to fill the slots. An app can write the file. It cannot invent a buyer's building name or an IBAN you never stored.

What every invoice must carry

GroupWhat belongs there
SellerName, TRN, address, emirate
BuyerName, TRN or TIN, address
DocumentNumber, issue date, type, currency, payment means
LinesDescription, quantity, unit price, VAT category and rate
TotalsThe document totals that follow from the lines
BankBank account (IBAN) only when payment means is credit transfer

That last row surprises people. An IBAN is not a decoration on every invoice. It is required when the payment means is a credit transfer. If you get paid another way, do not invent a bank line to look complete — put the payment means that is true.

The parts people forget

Four gaps show up again and again. The buyer's full address, not just a city. A VAT category on every line, not one rate for the whole invoice. A payment means that matches how you actually get paid. The IBAN on transfer invoices. A validator will not “know what you meant”. It will reject the file or send it back through your provider.

Credit notes are not a lighter document. They carry the same parties, the same addresses, and a reference to the invoice they adjust. If you cannot issue a complete tax invoice, you cannot issue a complete credit note either.

Credit notes carry the same

A credit note is the same shape with a different document type. Full or partial, it still needs seller, buyer, lines and totals. You do not edit an issued invoice to fix a quantity. You issue a credit note against it. That is true on paper today and true in PINT-AE tomorrow.

XML and PDF are different things

XML is the e-invoice. PDF is something a person can read. You may still send a PDF. You may still print. Neither replaces the structured file when e-invoicing applies. Do not wait for a designer to “make the XML look nice”. Make the slots true, then let software render a PDF if you want one for WhatsApp or the file folder.

TRN and TIN are easy to mix up. A VAT-registered party has a Tax Registration Number. A party that is not VAT-registered may be identified with a TIN scheme instead. Put the identifier that matches the party's VAT status. Putting a made-up TRN on a commercial invoice does not help.

Questions owners ask

Do I have to write XML?

No. You have to supply the facts. Software writes the XML. If a field is empty in your records, it will be empty in the file.

Is a PDF still needed?

A PDF is still useful for people. It is not the e-invoice. When the rules apply, the structured file is what travels on the network.

TRN vs TIN?

A TRN identifies a VAT-registered person. A TIN is used when the party is not VAT-registered. Use the one that matches the party's status on that invoice. Do not copy a customer TRN onto a seller who has none.
